Dos ocasiones, una sola visión

En dos ocasiones en mi vida he tenido la misma visión de mi boda. La primera ocasión fue a mis 15 años; abril del 2005, a finales de dicho mes, un domingo, cuando todavía asistía a la iglesia Second Union Church (SUC) en Guaynabo, Puerto Rico. La primera visión la tuve meses antes de que Dios, por medio de una profeta, me prometiera que al cabo de 7 años conocería quien será mi compañera.

La visión en la primera ocasión tiene unas diferencias que en la segunda. Esto porque en la segunda ocasión pude ver más detalles que estaban ocultos la primera vez. Pero en su mayor parte, es la misma visión en ambas ocasiones.

Siento escribir sobre la misma, pues nunca la había hecho anteriormente, y el Espíritu lleva inquietándome todo el día. Para entender un poco más el recuento, les haré una descripción del santuario de SUC.

En el santuario caben como unas 300-400 personas, pues tiene un piso y medio por el cual se llega por unas escaleras dentro del santuario. El altar tiene una cruz de madera bastante grande, con 4 sillas y una mesa de madera en el centro. El altar esta hecho en forma de escalones, teniendo 3 escalones para llegar al tope. Los bancos de madera y tela crean tres hileras entre cada uno, en forma de U, con una hilera central. El coro de la iglesia se sienta a la mano derecha, detrás de donde se encuentra el piano.

Yo estaba sentado en la parte de atrás del santuario. Allí me vi parado en el altar, vestido en una chaqueta con una flor en el bolsillo. Era yo, pero no era yo, pues me veía más flaco, y con más edad.  A mi lado tenía a una figura vestida igual, pero no podía ver quién era. El pastor, que en aquel momento no sabía quién era, solo que tenía pelo gris, estaba a mi izquierda, esperando con una sonrisa.

Tanto el piso principal como el medio piso superior estaban llenos a capacidad. La hilera central estaba llena de pétalos blancos, las paredes adornadas de flores de diferentes colores, e incluso los barandales del medio piso superior.

Reconocía las caras de algunas de las personas sentadas, familiares, pero la que más resaltaba era mi hermana, que entre sus brazos tenía un hijo (desconozco el sexo) “recién” (pudiera tener varios meses pero no tenía un año) nacido.  

Es aquí donde está la diferencia mayor: en la visión original (la que tuve a mis 15 años) la novia usaba velo, y era acompañada por una figura negra y gorda.  En la misma visión, la novia caminaba por la hilera central sin velo, y sola.

Cuando la misma llega al altar nos agarramos de manos y miramos hacia el pastor. Sobre el altar había ángeles tocando trompetas, y el trono de Dios descendía sobre el lugar.

(En los años que estuve en la escuela intermedia se me fue dada una versión del cuento que redactaré a continuación. Desafortunadamente no me acuerdo todos los detalles pero al esto ser una obra creativa añadiré algunos elementos propios.)

Adam llegó a las puertas de la iglesia, suspiró cerrando los ojos. En sus manos tenía una biblia; su rostro se veía agobiado, cansado, y entristecido. Caminó poco a poco hacia el altar, era el primero en llegar al servicio de la noche. Al llegar delante del altar, se arrodilló, y dio un gran gemido.

Hacía más de 3 años que se había apartado de los caminos del servicio a Dios. Había dejado su llamado por perseguir el anhelo de su corazón, que no iba acorde con la voluntad perfecta del Señor.

-“Perdóname Señor…”- suspiró Adam.

-“Yo no quería que escogieras el camino que escogiste”- le contestó una voz suave y tierna al oído, -“yo siempre he querido lo mejor para ti”.

Adam permaneció en silencio, sabía que era Jesús quien le hablaba.

-“Yo te ofrecí lo mejor de lo mejor, pero tu deseaste ir tras lo que tus ojos codiciaron; así fuiste juzgado. Pero yo te amo, mi niño, y eh visto el arrepentimiento genuino en tu corazón. Por eso te eh traído hasta aquí, para sanarte.”

Las lágrimas comenzaron a caer más rápido por las mejillas de Adam. El llanto de dolor y arrepentimiento caía como un rio embravecido tras fuertes lluvias, creando lagos de lágrimas en el piso. Adam solo susurraba “perdóname Señor”.

Tras un fuerte grito de dolor, Adam comenzó a sentir una corriente que era como un manto que lo arropaba. Su corazón comenzaba abrirse, a sentir amor, misericordia y paz entrar; sentía como si aguas cristalinas de un río hubiesen chocado con su corazón y lo hubiese limpiado de todo el fango y dolor que contenía el mismo.

Mientras Adam estaba orando en el altar, entró Eligia, una joven de la iglesia. Se arrodilló en el altar, contrario a donde se encontraba Adam.

-“Mira hacia tu lado Adam, y observa de lejos la bendición que tenía para ti”- susurró Jesús al oído de Adam, “pero tú no dispusiste hacer mi voluntad.”

Eligia se paró, caminó hacia la puerta y abrazó a su esposo, que acababa de llegar de un viaje misionero.

Palabras sin sentido

Escribo en este lienzo palabras sin sentido

Porque el corazón atado está elegido

Expresar en acciones y palabras es comprometido

Por eso escribo en este lienzo mi sentido

¿Por qué tiemblo al verte cerca?

¿Por qué suspiro si lejos está?

¡Cuánto anhelo poder decirte

Y mi corazón completamente abrirte!

Eran las 5:00 PM de un día que aparentaba ser como cualquier otro. El televisor estaba prendido en el noticiero de la tarde. Los niños corrían por la casa, mientras que el perro del hogar movía su cola de lado a lado sentado frente a la puerta. Efraín abrió la puerta, sus ojos cansados, su corbata un tanto sin ajustar, sus mangas abiertas y enrolladas hacia atrás, su camisa por fuera, maletín en mano, sonreía al ver la escena de su hogar.

El hombre soltó el maletín al lado de la puerta, se achicó para saludar al perro, y caminó hacia el cuarto familia. Al entrar, besó a su esposa Virginia, y se sentó en la butaca donde siempre se sentaba para ver las noticias.

“Como reportamos a medio día, milagroso nacimiento de un niño de una madre de 50 y tantos años, que alegan los doctores, no tenía matriz. Ampliaremos mas luego de esta pausa comercial” – dijo la mujer ancla mientras sonaba la música que señalaba el corte a comerciales.

-“¿Será eso posible Virginia?”- se expresó Efraín en un tono escéptico.

-“¿Qué cosa?”- contestó su esposa.

-“¿Pero no escuchaste la tele? Pues, eso de que una mujer de 50 y tanto años pueda dar a luz, y más si no tiene matriz”-  dijo Efraín mientras bajaba el volumen del televisor.

-“Si eso lo escuche, lo que no comprendo es por que preguntar si es o no es posible”- contestó Virginia en un tono sereno.

Efraín permaneció en silencio. Continuaba preguntándose cómo es posible tal hazaña. Después de todo, Efraín era un hombre de ciencia, un profesor en la Universidad de Puerto Rico, el no creía en milagros, él creía en experimentos que se pudieran probar.

-“Escuche en la radio mientras regresaba de buscar a los niños del colegio que la mujer murió en el parto”- le dijo Virginia a Efraín.

-“Bueno, si es cierto que no tiene matriz, es un resultado obvio… entiendo yo”- le contestó su esposo, en ese tono de profesor soberbio.

-“Lo que no entienden todavía los doctores es como sobrevivió el niño, y además como resucitó la mujer luego de estar 3 días muerta.”-

Al escuchar eso Efraín se echó a reír.

-“Me estás tomando el pelo Virginia… ¿realmente lo crees?”- dijo en son de burla el profesor universitario hombre de ciencias.

-“No he tomado decisión alguna. Solo te digo lo que informaron por la radio, mira ya va a empezar el noticiero”-

Confundido, Efraín veía las imágenes, y las entrevistas a las diferentes personas cercanas a esta mujer. ¿La comparaban con Sarah la de la biblia? Efraín no podía hacer nada más que salirse del cuarto para reír a carcajadas… o tratar de no reírse.

Cuando regresó de la cocina, Virginia continuó el tema:

-“¿Por qué se te hace tan difícil creer que Dios existe?”-

-“Pues mi amor, es tan sencillo. Si no puedo probar su existencia, pues no existe”- le contestó de vuelta Efraín –“además, si Dios existiese ¿Por qué permitir tanto sufrimiento y miseria en este mundo? Si Dios existiese, no permitiera tanta maldad en este mundo”-

-“Pues los profesores tampoco existen”- le respondió Virginia.

-“¿Pero como dices eso? ¡Pues claro que existimos!”- dijo Efraín sorprendido con la contestación de su esposa.

-“No… porque si existieran los profesores, no se colgaría ni un solo estudiante en la universidad”-

-“Los estudiantes se cuelgan por qué no indagan y no vienen a donde mi para yo explicarles el material”- respondió Efraín.

-“Así mismo pasa con Dios, si no vas a donde él, te parecería como si no existiera. Puedes leer la biblia mil veces y llegar a tus propias conclusiones. Pero si no lo buscas a él, de nada vale.”

No me des a Rebeca, dame a Lea

No me des a Rebeca, la ilusión del corazón

Porque engañoso son los anhelos de su razón

Dame mejor a Lea, tu escogida

La ayuda idónea para mi vida

¿Qué puede pedirle un siervo a su maestro

Que no sea lo que anhele su maestro?

Analyzing the Republican candidates from a Puerto Rican perspective

The Republican primaries have reached Florida, the first State to have a significant Hispanic population. According to Politics365.com, Puerto Ricans comprise 32% of the Hispanic vote in Florida, second only to Cubans whom make 35% of the Hispanic population.  Duringlast night’s CNN debate, the status of Puerto Rico was brought up, and Wolf Blitzer, CNN political anchor and moderator of the debate, only allowed Rick Santorum to answer.

Now, considering that Puerto Ricans in the States make an important voting bloc, specially the one that reside in the swing state of Florida, I thought about writing about the different stances of the candidates in regards to Puerto Rican statehood. Although Puerto Ricans in the island cannot vote in the general elections, we can vote in the primaries, and ours is set for March 18. In dispute, 23 delegates that could be decisive, if after Super Tuesday there is no clear winner.

With Governor Luis G. Fortuño’s endorsement, Mitt Romney already has 1 of those 23 delegate votes secured.  This endorsement also came with an announcement from the Romney camp that he would support Statehood for the island if Puerto Ricans voted for the option this next November 6, when we will be consulted upon the matter. Originally, Romney had launched his committee in Puerto Rico stating he would favor the decision made by the resident of Puerto Rico. Romney’s campaign manager in Puerto Rico is Zoraida Fonalledas, a member of one of the most influential and wealthiest families in the island. Fonalledas is also a member of the Puerto Rican Republican party leadership, and could have been influential in making the candidate take a stronger stance in favor of Statehood. After all, by rule, all Republican Party members in Puerto Rico must favor Statehood for the island.

But Mitt Romney hasn’t always been a friend of Puerto Rico. In another tale of his famous flip-flops, Mitt Romney was recently signaled out by the New York Times as being in charge of the layoffs of 300 DuPont workers in Puerto Rico. Bad track record, considering Romney is using his Bain Capital record as a way to promote the creation of jobs and getting the national economy back into shape.

Even so, if Romney were to win the nomination, as he seems to be poised to do, and beats Barack Obama, he would be the 4^th president to openly favor Statehood for the Island; the first three are Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, and George H. Bush.

Recently Carlos Méndez Martínez , the Puerto Rican Republican Party president and mayor of the town of Aguadilla, endorsed Newt Gingrich. Today The Hill is reporting that the same woman who asked the question on last night’s CNN debate, inquired of Gingrich if he would support Statehood for Puerto Rico. The Hill quotes Gingrich’s response as being: “I just said what I believe, and if you don't like it, I'm sorry we disagree. I believe the people of Puerto Rico should make the decision. It's not my place to decide for Puerto Ricans. But what I'm saying is that if the people of Puerto Rico decide they want to be a state, I will help.” Gingrich is arguably Romney’s biggest hurdle and competition for the GOP nomination. The candidate has expressed a more moderate stance on the issue of illegals in the federation.  He has expressed that young kids that wish to gain citizenship, but where brought here illegally could do so by joining the military.

Both Romney and Gingrich have favored that the United States officially recognize English as the official language of government. Even though English is the predominant language, the United States is the 5^th largest Spanish speaking nation in the world, and arguably would be practically impossible to impose, even if it where only for the federal government. Newt also got into hot waters on last night’s debate when he said he would work to make a lunar colony the 51^st state of the United States.

The last remaining candidate is Ron Paul. Even though he has yet to declare his position on Statehood, Ron Paul was one of the few Republicans in the House that voted against pre-conditioning Statehood with an English Only amendment for the HR2499, and also cosponsored the bill. 

Puerto Rico: A Conservative Eden

When talking to conservatives in the mainland, I come across very wild statements and views about Puerto Ricans. Once I begin to talk to them, they begin to realize that Puerto Ricans in the island of Puerto Rico are very different to those living in the mainland. Puerto Ricans are, for the most part, conservatives by nature.

The majority of the islands population claims to profess the Christian faith, although the majority of islanders are catholic by tradition. There are many islanders who are members of an ever growing protestant movement. I personally I’m an evangelical Christian. 

It is due to this, that many Puerto Ricans are conservative in most social topics. Faith is so important in Puerto Rico, that left leaning organizations have begun to attack churches and ecclesiastical institutions in Puerto Rico, specially the protestant ministries. This is because, large protestant ministries are campaign donors to many right leaning pro-statehood politicians. 

To give an example, in recent years, a controversial law was proposed in the local senate legislature. The proposed constitutional amendment, “law 99”, would have established marriage as an institution based between a man and a woman, and would have made civil unions between members of the same sex illegal. The law was not passed, due to pressure from the local Popular Democratic Party, who is mostly aligned with the Democratic Party. During the debate of the controversial project, the legislature was dominated by a conservative majority, whereas the executive branch was dominated by the liberal governor Anibal Acevedo Vilá.

Even though the proposed law to make a referendum to create the constitutional amendment did not pass, all efforts to change the Civil Code of Puerto Rico and allow gay marriages have failed. 

Most Puerto Ricans prefer to work than to live in public housing projects and receive government aide. Unfortunately, almost a half century of Democrat governors have created a system that forces the under privileged to live depending on government aide, and penalizing the recipients if they try to progress. If you could ask any Puerto Rican in the island if they trust the government, most would say absolutely no, no matter if it’s a Republican or a Democrat in power. This is because we are naturally skeptic of government.

Just like many southern Border States, Puerto Rico has a large illegal immigration problem from Haiti, and the Dominican Republic. Thousands die each year in the Mona Passage between the west coast of Puerto Rico and the eastern tip of the Hispaniola. Hundreds more are captured by the Coast Guard and Border patrol. The rest manage to enter the island and gain free access to public education, public State run healthcare services, and even manage to gain false identifications to benefit from Social Security and Pell Grants. Most of these illegal’s look for the American Dream in Puerto Rico.  Even though most are well intentioned, there is a good portion of these immigrants that when they come to Puerto Rico, because of the current economical crisis, is forced into criminal acts. 

Unfortunately, the real reason why we have had so many democratic governors in Puerto Rico is tied to our Status issue, and not to the way we view politics as a whole.  Currently, in Puerto Rico, the colonial or territorial political system is dominated not by the National parties, but by local colonial parties: the New Progressive Party (NPP), and the Popular Democratic Party (PDP). Like I stated before, the PDP is a majority of pro-territorial Democrats mixed with a left leaning pro-independence faction. The New Progressive Party, on the other hand, is divided between a majority of Republicans, and the pro-Statehood members of the Democratic Party. Out of the 4 NPP governors that have been elected 2 have been republican and 2 have been democrats.

Conservatives should support Puerto Rico, and any other territory that has all the conditions to do so, becoming a State. Currently, 3.5 million natural born American citizens are unable to vote for the commander-in-chief. Any mainland born American that moves to Puerto Rico, or any of the American territories, loses his or her right to vote in the general or midterm elections. Also, the old maxim of no taxation without representation should also be re-introduced into this debate.

It is true that Puerto Ricans in the island don’t pay federal income taxes (at least those that are not employed by the federal government), but we do pay Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and other federal taxes. We receive less federal funds from the federal government as a result of our territorial status, which in it by itself is unconstitutional, as we’re not even a State and are a burden to the Federal government.

Currently more Puerto Ricans participate in the armed forces than residents of over 40 States, and our veterans are not allowed to vote for their commander-in-chief, nor do they or any of us have voting representation in both Houses of Congress. 

Puerto Rico is a part of the United States. Puerto Ricans value the rights and liberties of being an American citizen, but unfortunately, because of past decisions and discrimination, we lack the full benefits of said rights and liberties in our own home. Any Puerto Rican that moves to the States is guaranteed access to all rights, liberties, and responsibilities. 

Sadly, it has been members of the conservative movement that in fear and ignorance of our true American values, have made alliances with the far left of our territorial politics. Republicans like Virginia Foxx, have been influenced by liberal lobbyist sent in by the pro-territory faction of the PDP, which is aligned to the Democratic Party, to stop any attempt of truly solving our Status problem.  But others like current presidential candidate, and congressman from the State of Texas, Ron Paul and congressman from the State of Alaska, Don Young, have made clear by actions they endorse and support the Self determination and Statehood for Puerto Rico. Even former presidents, like Reagan and G. H. Bush have supporter Statehood for Puerto Rico, after all, support for Statehood for the island is in the Republican National Party platform. 

If Puerto Rico were to become a State, it should be considered a swing State at first, but as time and maturity in National politics passed, I wholly believe we would be a conservative majority. As full members of the Union, we would be productive members to the Federation that constitutes the United States of America. Puerto Rico would be the shining beacon of liberty and democracy to the rest of Latin America.
